a sure sign
I liked the sign a lot better when it was broken. A bit of an institution in our neighborhood, the sign stands along High Street near where we live and go to school, advertising a local mom-and-pop variety dry cleaners. Given that we take High Street nearly everywhere, my children and I regularly watch for their weekly wit and wisdom, spelled out in mis-matched plastic block letters changed with a big long pole and their grandson’s sturdy arms. “Ouch,” the sign read when it was hit a few months back, one of its most profound moments. And then the sign was silent. But the...

Chaperoning the 6th grade trip to space camp with my daughter! Exploring caves and painting toenails and playing apples to apples at midnight and riding the space shot and swimming and admiring rockets and fake tattoos and pizza and oreos and sleepless nights and playing euchre with parents on the bus–all in a day’s work! Off to BED–perhaps tomorrow I’ll be able to put together a string of complete sentences, but not...

I was asked to speak recently to a group of about 50 single mothers at our church on the idea of “Becoming a Better Me.” As I thought and prayed about this idea, and what these women—who have undoubtedly heard their fair share of self-help propaganda instructing them how to live a “better life”—really needed to hear, an outline began to come together that felt pretty strong and pretty God-inspired. I warned the women, as we gathered that night, I was not going to be teaching your typical self-help shtick. I was not going to waste their time talking about secular...

Took a long-awaited walk around the block tonight, after having been cooped up inside for the past seven days with poor weather and even poorer health. The sun even graced us with his presence, casting an orange glow through the trees as it set behind the river. I tried to focus–on the colors, on the breeze, on my conversation, on my husband. It wasn’t easy. So much is swirling in my head–I’d end that sentence with “these days,” but these days are different from the rest only in the content of the swirling. It is not at all unusual for me to be lost...
