you tell me: gifts from god

What is the best gift you have ever received from God, that did not FEEL to you like a gift at the TIME? When did you realize it was truly a gift?

interruptions

He came, not as a flash of light or as an unapproachable conqueror, but as one whose first cries were heard by a peasant girl and a sleepy carpenter.  God tapped humanity on its collective shoulder, “Pardon me,” he said, and eternity interrupted time, divinity interrupted carnality, and heaven interrupted the earth in the form of a baby.  Christianity was born in one big heavenly interruption.   Max Lucado

a christmas blessing

A Christmas Blessing   May the Christmas light glow in your window as you come home on a dark and stormy night. May the music of carols warm your discouraged souls and make you want to sing again. May the crib scene catch your eye and hold you in its fascination. May you realize that every gift is as special as you want to make it. May the Christmas tree draw you to its dazzling lights. May your love be even more dazzling and welcome everyone home. May Jesus and Mary and Joseph bless you and all yours and keep you patient and happy and joyous all the season long. May you remember as best...

merry christmas!

JOY TO THE WORLD!!!   Joy to the World, the Lord is come! Let earth receive her King; Let every heart prepare Him room And Heaven and nature sing, And Heaven and nature sing, And Heaven, and Heaven and nature sing. Joy to the World, the Savior reigns! Let men their songs employ; While fields and floods, rocks, hills and plains Repeat the sounding joy, Repeat the sounding joy, Repeat, repeat, the sounding joy. No more let sins and sorrows grow, Nor thorns infest the ground; He comes to make His blessings flow Far as the curse is found, Far as the curse is found, Far as, far as, the curse...

christmas eve: mary’s immanuel

Unto us a child is born (Isaiah 9:2-7) Sweat begins to form on her forehead, her breath coming faster and faster, her heart beating faster and faster, her pain coming faster and faster. Young and inexperienced, weary and frightened, alone and ill-prepared— she shudders as labor begins. …there will be no more gloom for those who were in distress… Hands strengthened from his trade now ache from her grip as she wrestles with her discomfort, wrestles with her apprehension, wrestles with her body. …you have increased their joy, they rejoice before you… Waves of pain overcome her— waves...

wish lists

I really must stay out of the toy store. It’s just not a safe place for me to be. Nor is it a good place for me to be—with aisle upon aisle beckoning me to spend money I don’t have on gifts my child doesn’t need for a room that has no further space. And yet each year I find myself, somehow, in the middle of the store with my heart being wrenched by the same conflict as last year. When will I get it, Lord? Her little mind is filled with thoughts of Barbie, Hello Kitty, and the Power Puff Girls (where on earth did she pick up the Power Puff Girls?) Her wish list weighs down with the...

fourth sunday of advent: from darkness into light

There is a new fixture in the console of my car, and I’m not happy about it.  The hard, gray case is a subtle reminder—my eyes are telling me I’m getting older.  Looking back, I recognize this has been coming for some time now, but it wasn’t until about six months ago when the thought finally became clearly articulated in my head:  I can’t see in the dark.  After a reluctant (and expensive) visit to the optometrist, the problem has become clear— in the absence of enough light, my eyes just flat out refuse to focus.  In fact, unless it is complete daylight, I struggle to see...
